Sweet Jersey

There’s always room for another good song about where we grew up. As much as I acknowledge Springsteen as a paragon of New Jersey songwriting, it’s always refreshing to hear new music that champions that romanticized perspective of our suburban home. Attending school in the Midwest – farther away from home then it sounds – challenges my idea of belonging to a place each and every day. For many of the people who came from all over the United States to be here, it is so easy to make this their physical and psychological home. When I’m out here, part of me wants to be like them – Chicago seems like a nice place to want to live. But this  notion stops short in the tracks of my attachment to home.

Real Estate are from Ridgewood, NJ and this song is coming from that same place: longing for home and its simplicity. The lo-fi, contrapuntal guitars really get me on this one.

Carry me back to sweet Jersey, back where I long to be
